I have a problem which only occurs at the 14 minute point each and every time it is fully rebooted. Up until 14 minutes it will sleep/wakeup perfectly. At exactly 14 minutes my machine will completely freeze during wakeup from sleep.

Note this is not related to long sleeps or short sleeps as such. It is only related to sleeps occurring before or after 14 minutes of up time. Up to 14 minutes no issues whatsoever. After 14 minutes instant full freeze every single time. It freezes right at the point I press a key to wake. If I leave the monitor screen to naturally turn off it will wakeup from screen blank correctly forever, except obviously I want the hard drives/fans etc to spin down and save power too, so I prefer to enter normal sleep mode. I have completely disabled hibernation anyway. I used a stopwatch to time the onset of this issue, and the results are 100% reproducible every single time. 13:59 works perfectly, 14:00 freezes completely.

So what does the computer do after 14 minutes to screw it up? And how do I turn this off? I’ve already set the 15 minute “turn off hard disks” to OFF. And everything else looks normal. Any help from the windows experts out there much appreciated?

P.S. The specs of the system are Gigabyte EP35-DS3P, 2Gb Ram, E8400, Intel x25 SSD (newly fitted), ATI 4850. All the latest Win 7 32-bit driver versions for SSD, Motherboard, Video drivers are used. Win 7 32 bit Home Premium is used. My issue was present before I fitted the SSD also.

Hello Tweakit, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Check to see what time the display is set to turn off at in Power Plan Settings. This could be what is doing it. If so, setting both to either sleep or to never may help.

Another possibility is the screen saver if it is set to turn on around 14 minutes as well.

I’d be suspicious of a scheduled task running at the 15 minute mark. (A 14-min sleep trigger may actually be a 15-minute trigger to the scheduler).

Brink, it has got absolutely nothing to do with power plans, I know because I’ve turned off everything in the power plans, screensavers everything except SLEEP. In fact it’s best to ignore what triggered the sleep or whether the sleep was 1 minute long or 10 hours long. That’s totally irrelevant. The only relevant factor here is uptime of the system prior to entering sleep. In my case it is exactly 14 minutes of running before sleep causes a crash. The crash ALWAYS occurs immediately upon waking. Let me give you 2 scenarios so you fully understand my issue.

SCENARIO 1 (less than 14 min uptime before sleeping)
1. Turn on computer
2. Wait 13 minutes and 50 seconds doing anything or absolutely nothing.
3. Put computer to sleep by pressing the sleep button.
4. Computer enters sleep fine.
5. Wait anywhere between 5 seconds and 5 days. Doesn’t matter how long I wait.
6. Press the space bar to wake up.
7. Result = Perfect wakeup!! System perfectly responsive.

SCENARIO 2 (more than 14 min uptime before sleeping)
1. Turn on computer
2. Wait 14 minutes exactly doing anything or absolutely nothing.
3. Put computer to sleep by pressing the sleep button.
4. Computer enters sleep fine.
5. Wait anywhere between 5 seconds and 5 days. Doesn’t matter how long I wait.
6. Press the space bar to wake up.
7. Result = Computer totally frozen, screen blank, only way out is hard reset. Sometimes screen will turn on but usually completely frozen.

Corazon, that’s exactly what I’m looking for… A list of exactly what tasks/services Win 7 executes after 14 minutes, or whether it drops a power state of something on the motherboard or video card or turns something totally off after 14 minutes to cause my issue. Do you know where I can find this information to trace my issue down? Is there any detailed logging that can help find out what triggered exactly at 14 minutes, or perhaps a second before the sleep button is pressed in Scenario 2.

Take a look at Administrative Tools – Task Scheduler and start picking through the entries in the active tasks pane, specifically the “triggers” column…that’s about all I can come up with off the top of my head right now. Something there may catch your eye (some trigger like “after system has been idle for 15 minutes” or “15 minutes after system startup” or somesuch).

A quick update on the current situation… I am absolutely convinced now this issue is being triggered by a Scheduled Task. When I stop the Task Scheduler service in the registry (you can’t stop it in msconfig) it works! I can sleep and wakeup fine, after 10mins, 20mins, hours, no issues. The issue must be a default windows scheduled task setting up a wake timer or event during sleep or on wake that freezes my PC. Note this only happens when the system is allowed to run for exactly 14 minutes. If it sleeps prior to 14 minutes the issue is totally bypassed somehow and I can wakeup / sleep as many times as I want. Now the bad news… Task Scheduler runs 63 active tasks by default. And without Task Scheduler running, Event Logging stops running and worse, my SSD performance halves without task scheduler running, so I can’t just leave it off permanently, obviously I need to find the problem task and turn that task only off. This presents a problem because turning off 63 tasks one by one to find the culprit could potentially take weeks of reboots and testing. Anyone have any idea what tasks windows normally runs 14/15 minutes into uptime/idletime, that might be related to networking or sleep or disk defrag or whatever it might be doing that I could focus on? Better still, is there a simple way to know exactly what scheduled task just ran at any given second, say using event logger or similar, bearing in mind my issue only happens right on the 14 min mark.

Update… found out how to enable task history. Looks like only 3 tasks operate right on 14 mins.

3. MsCtfMonitor

A bit of luck it was the very first one I tried. LPRemove was uninstalled as a task, and bingo! The issue is fully resolved. Turns out this task is for language pack removal, something most will never ever need. Looks like the default settings for the task is to trigger after 14 minutes of start or 14 minutes of idle or something similar. For some reason on my PC, executing this program prevents my system from fully waking up if I happen to enter sleep state anytime after it is triggered. Thank goodness I don’t have to suffer full reboots ever again.

Just dropping in to congratulate you on your perserverance and eventual victory! Also thanks for leaving a record of your particular fix for posterity…many thread-starters don’t do that. 🙂

Another issue caused by a task I must remember. TaskScheduler can be a bit of a pig and hide stuff well in wait. I’ll remember this one though

Wow. Who would have thought that finding this thread would be the answer to my month long nightmare with my new pc? Every time I left it alone for 10-15 minutes, it would go to sleep as intended. The power light flashed continually showing that it was asleep. And that is exactly how it stayed…asleep! No amount of coaxing would wake the wretched thing. Every key hit, mouse wildly moved around…power button hit. Nothing, until the button was held to force a shut down, then start all over again, with the message showing the pc was shut down improperly. I tried every power setting there was and finally set it up so I would never sleep…which was fine, although a waste of energy. So it sat here running all day and if I wanted it to sleep, I used the sleep option in shut down. It woke right up from that!!! It made absolutely no sense. I read in other places that people thought it to be a motherboard issue…or memory getting a glitch upon wake up. Nobody knew what caused it…and then somehow my search brought me here to this post!

I was hesitant of doing exactly what was suggested, because 1, I am far from a techy guy, and 2, my problem was not a result of a 14 minute running point, rather it was falling asleep fine, just not waking up. BUT, I read the part about the Language Pack Removal…LPRemove, in the task scheduler and I wondered what could I possibly lose by disabling it? If something goes wrong, I can just re-enable it again…nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Well, 4 days in and 3 dozen wake ups later, and my problem is miraculously solved! Just amazing. The absolute last thing I would have ever believed would be the culprit of a sleeping computer refusing to wake. To whoever thought to test this, my sanity greatly thanks you!!!!
